On a PC you can right-click to place a flag. On mobile, or anywhere right-click isn't convenient, turn on "Flag mode" and tap a square to place a flag there. Tap the button again to turn flag mode off.
Can my very first click hit a mine?
No. The square you click first, and the squares around it, are guaranteed to be mine-free, so you can never lose on your opening move.
