Where does this calorie data come from?

Whole and lightly processed foods like apples and chicken breast are compiled from cross-referenced USDA (U.S. Department of Agriculture) nutrition database figures. Cooked dishes vary enormously in calories depending on recipe, ingredient ratio, portion size, and brand, so we've compiled representative average values from multiple sources, and flagged items with especially wide variance directly on their card.

How to read the numbers

The large number on each card is calories per 100g (or 100ml for beverages), and the carb/protein/fat values below it are for that same 100g/100ml. The "per serving" line is the approximate total calories for that realistic portion size β€” use the 100g figures to compare foods, and the per-serving figures to estimate an actual meal.

A note on usage

The figures on this page are reference estimates based on typical preparation methods and average portion sizes, and may differ from the actual nutrition facts of what you eat. For precise calorie tracking, check the nutrition label on packaged foods, and weigh home-cooked food directly where possible. Frequently Asked Questions

The calorie count I see here is different from another source. Which one is right?

Cooked dishes and processed foods especially can vary a lot in actual calories depending on recipe, ingredient ratio, and brand, so there isn't a single "correct" number. This page provides representative averages compiled from multiple sources as a reference; for precise values, prioritize the nutrition label on the actual product.

Is this raw or cooked?

It varies by item. Each food's name notes its state where relevant (e.g. "raw," "grilled," "boiled," "steamed") β€” check that label. The same ingredient can have different calories per 100g depending on how it's cooked, since moisture content changes.

Can you add more foods?

Yes β€” let us know what you'd like added via the homepage, and we'll add it once we've verified reliable data.
