Age Difference Calculator

Enter two dates of birth to find the exact gap between them in years, months and days, plus the total number of days.

What the calculator does

Type two dates of birth and the page returns the gap as "years, months and days", the same gap as a plain count of days, weeks and months, which person is older, and the difference between the two birth years. It is useful when you want to describe the spacing between siblings, put a number on the gap in a relationship, check a family tree, or compare two historical figures. A gap of "four years" in conversation can hide almost anything from three years and one day to four years and 364 days, so working from the actual dates is the safe way to say it.

How the gap is calculated

The earlier date becomes the start and the later one the end, whichever order you typed them in. The calculator then adds whole months to the start date, one at a time, and keeps the largest number of months that does not overshoot the end date. Divide that number by 12 to get the years; the remainder is the months. The days are whatever is left between that last month anniversary and the end date.

The total number of days is computed separately, by turning each date into a day number at UTC midnight and subtracting. That means daylight-saving changes and your time zone cannot add or remove a day. Leap days are counted automatically because they are part of the calendar.

When a start date is on the 31st and the target month is shorter, the month anniversary falls on the last day of that month. Adding one month to January 31 lands on February 28 (or 29). This is the usual convention in calendar software, and it prevents the negative number of days you would get from the naive "subtract the day numbers and borrow the previous month" method.

Reference table: common gaps in other units

These values are calculated when the page is built, using the Gregorian average year of 365.2425 days. Real gaps move by a day or two depending on how many leap days fall inside them, so treat the figures as approximate.

The same gap feels different at different ages

A five-year gap between a ten-year-old and a fifteen-year-old is a large share of their lives; between a sixty-year-old and a sixty-five-year-old it is a small one. The table keeps the gap at five years and shows how the older person's age relative to the younger shifts, and what percentage of the older person's life the gap represents.

Worked examples

Example 1. 1990-03-15 and 1994-06-20. From March 15 to June 20 is 3 months and 5 days, on top of four whole years, so the gap is 4 years, 3 months and 5 days. In days that is 1,558, and the birth years differ by 4.

Example 2. 1988-01-31 and 1990-03-01. Adding 25 months to January 31, 1988 would give February 31, 1990, which does not exist, so the anniversary is set to February 28. One more day reaches March 1: the gap is 2 years, 1 month and 1 day, or 760 days in total. A naive method that borrows the length of the previous month would produce a negative day count here.

Example 3. 1995-12-31 and 1996-01-01. The birth years differ by one, yet the two people were born one day apart. If someone says "we are a year apart", the exact gap can be anywhere from one day to almost two years.

Example 4. 2000-02-29 and 2001-02-28. The tool reports 1 year, 0 months and 0 days because February 28, 2001 is the leap-day anniversary in a common year, yet only 365 days actually elapsed. The two notations answer different questions, and the page shows both.

"How many years apart" can mean three things

The difference between two dates of birth does not change as time passes. What changes is how each person's age is counted on any given day, so for a person's current age, use the Age Calculator.

Mistakes and limits

Using the result

Pick the form that fits the situation. Family and everyday speech usually use the birth-year gap ("four years apart"). Medical, insurance and legal contexts care about exact ages on a given date. Planning around sibling spacing is easier in months: a gap of 30 months, for instance, is 2 years and 6 months. The "Copy result" button puts a one-line summary on your clipboard that you can paste into a note or message.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which date should I enter first?

It makes no difference. The earlier date is picked automatically and the result says which of the two people is older.

Why does the result say 1 year but only 365 days?

Years, months and days follow the calendar, so a year always ends on the same date. A total in days counts every day, so a gap that spans a leap day contains 366 of them. Both are correct and answer different questions.

Can two people born in the same year be almost a year apart?

Yes. January and December births in one year can be 11 months and about 30 days apart, even though the birth-year gap is zero.

How are leap-day birthdays handled?

The total in days includes leap days automatically. In years, months and days, a date that does not exist, such as February 29 in a common year, is moved to the last day of that month.

Does the calculator account for the age-counting conventions used in some countries?

No. It measures real time between two dates, which is the same under every convention. A traditional "reckoned" age differs by calendar rules, so use the Age Calculator if you want to see those numbers beside the standard age.
